Todd Wainio is a fictional character in Max Brooks' novel World War Z. He was a veteran who served in the Battle of Yonkers and later the Battle of Hope. He is voiced by Mark Hamill.
World War Z[]
Battle of Yonkers[]
In Yonkers, Wainio was a M249 SAW gunner, wearing MOPP gear, battling hordes of zombies from his location, which were coming from Time Square. He was really disappointed with how the battle went and how their superiors had the supplied them with limited ammo for certain weapons and how troops were placed right in front behind sandbags. He was placed there, to kill off any dead who survived the bombardment of tanks and choppers firing massive shells and missiles. He was nearly killed during the incident where the zombies began overrunning the area, but luckily he was rescued by his fellow comrades before making his way west.
Battle of Hope[]
Wainio was in Los Angeles, performing clean and sweep operations before mobilizing with the army to retake the United States from the zombies, which now inhabited it. He describes that the new army was like going back in time and believed it wasn't too dissimilar to the one he fought in and nearly died with at Yonkers. He explains that it was a fine test of seeing how well prepared the army they were this time around and it proved to be extremely effective.
Road To New York[]
A day following his interview about the Battle of Hope, Wainio explains that the next part of the operation was the Road to New York, which was extremely long and how they had the army divided into 3 groups, north, center and south, as to kill off every ghoul they found. It took 3 years due to a variety of different things, including supply drops.
Characteristics[]
Physical Appearance[]
Wainio is an older Caucasian male, with an expanding ponch, receding gray hair and 3 deep parallel scars on his right cheek and was a smoker.
Personality & Traits[]
Wainio seems to be very opinionated about the Battle of Yonkers, which he nearly died in and even he believed that the military screwed up. As a soldier, he was shown to have a level head, as it aided him throughout his military career. He admitted to that swinging a Lobo felt good and even empowering, as well as personal.
Trivia[]
- Mark Hamill, the voice of Wainio also voiced the Joker, but is best known for his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films.
