Sherry Birkin is a fictional character in the Resident Evil franchise. She first appeared in Resident Evil 2, but later in Resident Evil 6.
Biography[]
Sherry was born around the 1986 to Doctors William and Annette Birkin, two virologists working for the Umbrella Corporation in the Arklay Laboratory. Her relationship with her parents was strained to her parents' work schedule, even to be neglected after their transfer to NEST in the 1990s. This was due to her parents' work on the G-Virus, a strain of the progenitor virus that would be used in a eugenics program to enhance humanity further. While it was known she attended school at East Raccoon Elementary, little else is known about Sherry's early life. For her 11th birthday, she was given a locket by her mother, which had been related to the G-Virus research of both Annette and her husband. Sherry's protection was considered a priority and as such, she was forced to keep away from those who could be hunting for their research.
Raccoon City Incident[]
In September 22 of 1998, the Umbrella Security Service infiltrated Birkin's lab in order to obtain the G-Virus. While they succeeded in gunning down Birkin and stealing samples of the virus, William infected himself with a sample and wiped out the force after transforming into a monster, which resulted in the T-Virus leaking into the sewers beneath Raccoon City as a result. 2 days later, the T-Virus was able to reach Raccoon City's water supply, resulting in thousands of the city's inhabitants to become mindless flesh-eating zombies and other B.O.Ws as consequence, resulting in them overwhelming local law enforcement and fire departments in order to stop the outbreak. She was pulled out of school early and went to the Raccoon City Police Station, where she found it to be no safer than anywhere else, leading her to keep away from any violence and hide around the station. Sherry would come into contact with 2 other people, the first of which was Claire Redfield, who had newly arrived to the city, looking for her brother Chris Redfield, formerly of S.T.A.R.S.. The second was rookie RPD officer Leon S. Kennedy, who resisted the urge to end his life in order to keep Sherry safe alongside Claire. Birkin would eventually traverse the sewers, leading to her father infecting her with a G-Virus parasite.
Sherry had been found by Claire and her condition was rapidly deteriorating, leading her to be taken to NEST and administered the G-Virus vaccine. Claire succeeded in administering the vaccine to Sherry before her transformation, however the alterations to her genome remained uncorrected. Sherry accompanied Claire and Leon aboard a train, which left NEST before the entire facility self-destructed. In transit however, William was still in pursuit of Sherry, but Claire and Leon were able to kill him with a massive explosion. Following their escape, the trio initially stayed together, but Leon was pressuring Claire to leave both him and Sherry in order to continue her search for Chris.
Government Custody[]
Following the incident in Raccoon City, Sherry and Leon were found by authorities and taken into state custody, while the government sought to research her G-Virus infection for their own research. Sherry's safety had been guaranteed by Leon, after he accepted an offer to work for the D.S.O., formerly known as the Anti-Umbrella Pursuit and Investigation Team. Sherry was kept in the household of American civil servant Derek C. Simmons, in order to keep her safe from the threat posed by Dr. Albert Wesker. Secretly however, Simmons planned to use her for his own private research, which in the years of her custody, allowed him to engineer the C-Virus from blood samples extracted over the years.
Government Work & Global Bioterror Attacks[]
Following Wesker's death at the hands of B.S.A.A. operatives Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar in 2009, the government offered Sherry freedom from protective custody in exchange for becoming one of their field operatives, which she accepted. This was due to the fact that she had become increasingly aware of the threat bioterrorism held. Sherry joined the D.S.O. by December of 2012, which was an organization assigned to investigate and combat bioterrorism. At this point in time, the C-Virus was nearing completion, making its way to Edonia, where Sherry had been given orders to find Jake Muller, the son of Albert Wesker, who carried antibodies to the virus in hopes of creating a vaccine. Jake demanded a sum of $50,000,000 dollars for a single pint of blood, which Sherry would have to run cross her supervisor first. The pair had an arduous time escaping the city, which was in part due to Muller's affiliation with the Edonian Liberation Army. After meeting with B.S.A.A. operatives under the command of Chris Redfield, the pair aided them against several J'avo, Ogromans and even destroying several anti-aircraft batteries before boarding a Chinook out of the city.
While in transit, Sherry arranged for Jake to receive his due payment with her supervisor over the phone before they came under attack by Neo-Umbrella. While the pair held them off however, they ended up having to abandon their ride and descended into the mountains with a torn parachute. Both awoke, finding Sherry impaled by a piece of metal, which was removed, allowing her body to rapidly heal itself as a result. They traversed the mountains, gaining a brief respite, but were followed by ELA forces, as well as an avalanche and the Ustanak, which eventually manage to capture them. Sherry and Jake were then relocated to a facility in Lanshiang, China for the next 6 months. When both escaped experimentation, Jake and Sherry sped down the highway on a motorcycle, chased by Neo-Umbrella forces. During this, Sherry was able to gain contact with Simmons, rendezvousing with him at the Kwun Lung building in Koocheng. On their way, they met with Leon and Secret Service agent Helena Harper, learning from them that Simmons was in fact responsible for the bioterror attacks. This was where Sherry disclosed that she reported to Simmons and was to meet him in Koocheng.
Sherry and Jake arrived sometime after Leon and Helena, where she realized Leon was telling the truth and that Simmons was indeed responsible for the attacks, as well as the infection of the president, who was put out of his misery by Leon. During an ensuing firefight, Jake and Sherry were re-captured by Carla Radames' J'avo, who betrayed Simmons. They woke, captive in an underwater facility near the Chinese coastline. They were released by Chris and Piers Nivans, thanks to information provided to them by Leon. Upon meeting the B.S.A.A. operatives, Chris revealed to Jake that he knew his father and was also responsible for his death. Sherry attempted to talk Jake out of killing Chris, which only led to Chris' cheek being grazed by a bullet and following the hatching of HAOS, Sherry and Jake left the facility, despite Sherry's protest to help the other two. They eventually found themselves chased by the Ustanak again, finally killing the massive B.O.W on a high-speed train out of the now exploding facility. While on their way out, Jake thanked Sherry for saving him. Following the events which unfolded, Sherry was on a plane, likely bound for home, parting ways with Jake. He relinquished a pint of blood to make a vaccine, but lowered his price of $50,000,000 to simply $50 dollars.
Characteristics[]
Physical Appearance[]
In Resident Evil 2, Sherry was a young Caucasian female of 10-12 years of age. She had blond hair and blue eyes, wearing her East Raccoon Elementary School uniform, with blue and white being the primary colors of her outfit. By 2012 however, Sherry is now 26 years of age, standing at 5' 5" tall and weighing in at 104 lb. soaking wet. Initially, she wore winter wear while she was in Edonia, escorting Jake. Following her Folcapture, she was given a white cover shirt for test subjects. She eventually found her stuff, but missing her winter coat. Despite this, this outfit consisted of a white dress shirt, blue scarf, shoulder holster for extra magazines, as well as a belt with a holster for her gun. She wears a pair of pants, which only go down so far, as well as a pair of heeled boots. While she does have blond hair still, it's shorter than it was prior.
Personality & Traits[]
By the time of the Raccoon City incident, Sherry showed to be a kind girl, but also shy and quiet, which was likely the result of her parents constantly working and never giving her much attention. Despite this, she found a sister figure in Claire Redfield, who was hell-bent on protecting her, who did so more than her own mother. By 2012 however, Sherry had become strong and intelligent woman, able to hold her own, while retaining her kind demeanor and remembering her friends like Leon and Claire.
Powers & Abilities[]
Powers[]
- G-Virus Augmented Physiology: After being infected by her father with a G-Virus parasite, Sherry had begun to undergo a transformation, which if it hadn't been treated in time, would've resulted in her transforming into a creature like her father. Luckily for her however, she was vaccinated thanks to Claire, but the alterations to her genome remained. As such, she possesses a number of abilities no normal human possesses following her infection.
- Regenerative Healing Factor: One of the most well known of her powers, comes in the form of Sherry's rapid healing. This allows her to take significant punishment to her body and heal within moments. This was seen when she was impaled by a piece of metal while escorting Jake Muller. She removed the metal and her body began to heal itself.
