Monster Island is the first book in a trilogy by David Wellington. In this book we see the result of a plague through the eyes of a former U.N. weapons inspector, Dekalb now working for a Somalian warlord in order to protect his young daughter. In this world only countries with high number of firearms have managed to survive, mainly African countries such as Somalia. In this book Dekalb is sent home to New York, which had been completely overrun a few months before. He was sent there to collect AIDS medication which is in very short supply. While there they meet Gary, a former medical student, who at the time of the outbreak seeing the "undead" as the future of humanity (as Homo mortis) managed to keep his memories and intelligence using dialysis and a ventilator machine. Dekalb and the other survivors soon find out that there is something more dangerous than the undead.
