Three American treasure hunters; James Miller, Luke MacNamara, and Willard Donglass, travelled to Mexico in the hopes of "discovering" (pillaging is the more accurate word) lost Mayan artifacts that they could sell back home. During their stay in the town of Tzinteel, the trio witnessed the burial of a man who was the "drinker of Satan's blood" who was gagged, bound, and still alive. Believing that this was some sort of barbaric execution method, they raced to rescue the man, a horrible mistake. Upon being freed, the man, now turned into a zombie, attacked its liberators. Their weapons had no effect, MacNamara was killed in the fight, while the rest suffered minor bite wounds. Each of the survivors then sent a letter to their families, who received them a month later, that detailed how MacNamara was killed during a fight, along with a sworn statement that he "came back to life," indicating that he'd turned, and how their wounds were now festering and an awful fever had set in (a symptom of Solanum.) The pair finished by stating that they would rest in Mexico City for a few days to receive medical treatment before heading home ASAP. Neither were ever heard from again.
